SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses in industry is conflicting. The benefit or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place.

The explosive instability of the lower dialkyl peroxides (e.g., dimethyl peroxide) and 1,1-bis-peroxides decreases rapidly with increasing chain length and degree of branching, the di-tert-alkyl derivatives being amongst the most stable class of peroxides. Though many 1,1-bis-peroxides have been reported, few have been purified because of the higher explosion hazards compared with the monofunctional peroxides. It is unlikely that this derivative would be particularly unstable compared to other peroxides in its class [Bretherick 2nd ed., p 44 1979].
Aluminum, copper, brass, lead, zinc salts, mineral acids, oxidizing or reducing agents all can cause rapid decomp.

Basic treatment: Establish a patent airway. Suction if necessary. Watch for signs of respiratory insufficiency and assist ventilations if necessary. A 4 day subacute skin irritation test in rabbits was performed with this hydroperoxide in propylene glycol. After four applications of one a day, 1.75% wt./vol. of this chemical caused mild to moderate dermatitis; 3.5, 7.0, and 14.0 percent caused severe dermatitis at the end of 4 days. In fact, for the two highest concentrations the fourth application was discontinued due to necrosis.
An acute inhalation study using rats exposed to the nominal concentrations of 2.18, 4.26, and 5.59 mg/l caused red nasal discharge at even the lowest dose. The animals also showed signs of shortness of breath, reduced activity, and vasodilitation. Fifty percent of the animals exposed to the 5.59 mg/l level died showing similar symptoms.
